“Hineini (Hebrew for “Here I Am”) chronicles the story of one student‘s courageous fight to establish a gay-straight alliance at a Jewish high school in the Boston area and the transformative impact of her campaign on everyone involved. Beyond the struggle to create a supportive environment for gay and lesbian students and teachers at the school, this is the story of a community wrestling with the very definition of pluralism and diversity in a religious context.”
Co-sponsored by the San Diego LGBT Community Center, United Jewish Federation, the Agency for Jewish Education, the San Diego Jewish Academy, Jewish Family Service, and every synagogue on the The film touched many who attended on a very deep level. According to a questionnaire that was distributed at each screening, a large majority of people found the film “important”, “relevant”, “courageous”, and “hopeful”, noting that it made them feel “proud”, “motivated”, “validated”, and “inspired”. A huge number of those in attendance informed us that there is a need to show the film in every public, private, and religious school in San Diego. One respondent elaborated on the impact the film had on him: “I really appreciate this film as documentation of a community struggling with this issue and a wonderful example of how we can work toward a more open and accepting way of relating to each other. Thank you for bringing this to San Diego!” For another viewer, the film’s focus on youth activism was “a very uplifting experience. [The film] makes me believe in the future and the power our youth has in shaping it. It displayed a huge amount of courage.” To learn more about Hineini, please visit the website of Keshet: *If you are interested in bringing Hineini to your school or organization, contact:
